Gospitalniy Val Street is located in the north-eastern part of the central Moscow. As the name tells, the street once
was a part of the former Kamer-Kollezhskiy rampart that encircled Moscow and was the city border. Yes, it was very long
ago, and today this area is considered rather central than peripheric. Another part of the name tells about a hospital
- yes, it really exists in this street. This oldest Moscow hospital was established by an order issued by Peter the Great
in 1707. It occupies a large block at the corner of Gospitalniy Val, Gospitalnaya Square and Gospitalnaya Street. The main
façade of the hospital that was finished in 1802 faces Gospitalnaya Street; that wildstone-paved street had a tram
line until 1986, but it is difficult to find its traces today.

Gospitalniy Val begins from this place - Gospitalnaya Square. The delta junction of tracks no longer exists in the
centre of the square, and only the uncommon curve of the remaining line reminds of its existence.

The hospital buildings are located along this part of the street. Tram tracks in the street are completely laid
separately from the motorcar traffic lanes.

The lowest place of this street is located at the crossing with Novaya Doroga (New Way) Street. It is hard to believe
but there is a river named Sinichka that flows under this crossing, long ago put into a tube.

After climbing a steep slope of the former Sinichka river valley, the line passes by the gates of one of the oldest
cemetries of Moscow - Vvedenskoye, or Nemetskoye. The cemetery dates from 1771, and for many years was used as a
burial place for foreigners that lived in Moscow (nemets in old Russian meant foreigner). A red brick
wall of the cemetery was built in XIX century, and the Gothic chapel - in 1911.

A new residential zone continues along the next part of the street, with more new blocks emerging here year by year.
They replace old buildings of this area that were constructed in the middle of XX century and fell into decay with
years.

Trams are the main mean of mass transportation in Gospitalniy Val Street, with only one bus route assisting them
on a small stretch. They keep playing this major role since the start of revenue service on this line in 1933. And
although nobody noted the 70th anniversary of this line, it is nice to see that it continues to serve thousands of
Muscovites day by day.
