Trolleybuses in Teplice

Teplice were home of one of the first electric tramways in the area of Czech Republic, opened 1995. After WW2, decision was taken to preserve tramway, but to add several trolleybus lines too to improve urban traffic. So first round-line was opened here in 1952. This service had one serious problems - nobody used it. After few months, line was shorted several times. After three years of service there was decided, that trolleybuses can carry all of transport needs, so trolleybus routes were expanded, and until 1959 tramway route was abandoned. For service needs there were classic 7Tr trolleybuses, later replaced with 8Tr and 9Tr types. Until 1966 all major routes to Retenice, Ujezdecek and Trnovany were built.

In 70’s period there were large problems with trolleybuses. New lines were not built, and also only few new vehicles were delivered at this time, some used 9Tr trolleybuses were purchased from Decin. Two routes - to Retenice and to Trnovany were abandoned at this time, so only two routes remained in service.

Things were changed in early 80’s. New 14Tr trolleybuses were delivered, and during the 1984-1997 was network extended more than triple! It stared with new route to Mestske saly, then in 1987 line to Retenice was restored, and new line to Anger was opened. Even in 1989 new major route to Prosetice was opened, route to Trnovany followed, extended to Somet one year later.
New housing estates on Tresnovka and Nova Ves were connected with historic city, new innercity routes were built, and also suburban area of Panorama was linked to city with trolleybuses. Trolleybus fleet was extended with new 14Tr and also with articulated 15Tr trolleybuses too.

Today, there is also large network with 13 lines - together with Brno is this highest number in Czech Republic. Trolleybuses are covering all major transport needs, so only 15% is covered by buses.
