Opava, important centre of Silesia, was served by electric tramway since
start of century. Although network was quite large, after war, there were
plans to replace tramways with modern trolleybuses. Construction started
in 1950. First line between stadion and hospital was given into service
on 24th August 1952. In 1953 was network massively extended with new lines
to Jaktar and Ostroj. In 1956, last tramways were abandoned, and until
1957 lines to Vitkovska and to Katerinky were opened.
Trolleybus fleet started to operate with 6 vehicles Škoda 7Tr. They
were stored - as usual - in old tramway depot. In 1953, fleet was extended
with another batch of 6 Škoda 7Tr, in 1958-1960 followed by Škoda 8Tr trolleybuses.
In 1963-1965, all single-track routes in city centre were converted
to one major double-track. No new vehicles were purchased at this time,
in 1970 short branch line to cemetry was opened.
Since 1971, 9Tr trolleybuses are delivered to Opava, followed by 14Tr
since 1984. In mid of 80's, old tramway depot was unable to store
all new trolleybuses, so new modern depot in Kylesovice started to be built.
New trolleybus line to Kylesovice was opened in 1991, but although depot
is finished by 85%, it was not opened until today!!!
Today, trolleybuses in Opava are organized quite good, but no extension
of network is possible, until depot will be opened. At this time, there
are 5 regular lines, one additional runs rush hours only. Troleybuses carried
about 2/3 of all passengers in Opava.
