URBAN TRANSPORT NEWS 2/2000

Brno: Low floor cars RT6N1 evid.č.1801-1804 found their use – as mobile ticket sale offices! On certain pre-defined days are stored on different loops within the city, and long-term tickets (monthly, quarterly) are on sale there. Citizens older than 65 years can also visit here (after purchase of ticket) a medical advisor for elderly people!

České Budějovice: Since 1st January is in České Budějovice transferable tariff used. There was significantly changed line routing scheme for trolleybus (and bus) network. Trolleybuses now operate as follows:
2 Borek – railway station – Rožnov (no change)
3 Suché Vrbné – Sídliště Máj (around railway station)
14 Papírny – Sídliště Vltava
15 Rožnov – Sídliště Vltava
17 Railway station – Sídliště Máj (across “New bridge”)
19 – not in service any more
(Lines 14 a 15 does not run around rly.station!)
Low floor trolleybuses Skoda 21Tr are since that change on service on line 15 exclusively (on that line now are usually no articulated trolleybuses 15Tr). This should solve all complains of citizens, when 21Tr car occurred on normal line instead of much bigger car 15Tr.

Jablonec nad Nisou: Between 5th and 6th February, celebrations of 100 years of urban transport were made. On end station of interurban tramway from Liberec was displayed coach No. 88 from Liberec (still with incomplete interior, therefore no public journeys were made), historic trolley tower No.125 and T-2 car No.23, where photo collection was presented to visitors. In former tramway’s, today bus depot (where still rest of rails can be observed), varied historic and contemporary buses were displayed. These buses were also on service on anniversary circle line No.100.

Ostrava: Out-of-sight is refurbishment process of tramways in Ostrava, although they already run for years. In 1999 was finished process of replacement of old electric equipment to new one TV-8 (thyristor). This new electrical equipment was built into 46 tramcars of T-3 type 710, 718, 931, 935, 939, 943, 969, 978, 980, 981, 982, 984, 985, 988, 989, 992, 993, 997, 1001, 1005, 1009, 1013, 1014, 1017, 1018, 1022, 1028-1047, and into seven cars of K2 type (805-811). For a lot of vehicles, interior was also refurbished (new passengers seats, opening doors “on demand” by passengers, new info panels, etc.) Except some already mentioned cars with TV-8 it also apply to another T-3 cars T-3  790, 796,797, 937,941,949 and 1026 (all with seating 1+1) and 773,902,903, 907, 933, 947, 951, 1012, a 1015 (newly 1+2 seats 1+2).
There was planned to continue this year with new IGBT-driven electric equipment TV-14. However, later was decided to purchase electric equipment Progress from Alstom company (also IGBT-driven). This electric equipment was then installed into car No.1016. This car is now in extensive testing, and when electric equipment will be certified for regular use, approx. 25 cars will be modernized this year, maybe also for different cities such as Brno or Olomouc.
Ostrava is last city, where two-axle tramcars are on duty as working cars (with exception of Schörling rail brushes in Praha and Brno). There were last five cars 8002,8031,8033 and 8035 (snow plows) and 8024 (trolley tower). During 1999 cars 8031 and 8033 were withdrawn. No.8031 should be rebuilt as “partywagen” for circle journeys across the city, and should join car No.8021 (named “Barborka”) that is already used for that purpose. Car No.8033 should be restored back to original state, and then transferred to Technical museum Brno (under original No.33).
All remaining cars are in winter 1999/2000 still in service, but for last year. Both snow plows (8002 and 8035) should be replaced with new multi-purpose rail vehicle 8608 (so-called RSP-3 type, self-built by company, there already exists similar vehicle 8607 plus one snow plow RSP-2 8606). Luckily, no one of these vehicles will be scrapped. Cars No.8002 and 8024 will be included into Ostrava’s museum collection, and held there with current look as working cars, car 8035 should be restored back to original state (No.35) and also included into museum’s collection.
New in museum is also wrack of trailer No.169. This car was self-built in Ostrava in 1921, but on platform of former car of steam tramway built in 1894! If there will be enough funds, this car will be restored back into 20’s state.
Car T-2 No.619 that was on focus of tramway group from Bialsko-Biala (Poland). There was hope to transport this car to Poland, but these plans were realized. On other hand, museum in Brooklyn (USA) claimed their interest, so there is now negotiation about possibilities of transport in progress.
Museum’s T-2 No.681 is now restored back into look from 80’s. It is expected to show this car during celebrations of 40 years of tramway depot Poruba that are planned for 16th and 17th June 2000.

Praha: On 27th January 2000 in 9:42 was M1 metro unit for first time in service with passengers. This is last part of trials that are needed to certify this vehicle for regular service with passengers. At this time, car is on duty on workdays except rush hours, on Sat+Sun whole day. For these trials, unit 4103+4204+4205+4206+4104 is used. Probably in mid of March, this unit can be used during rush hours too. Formerly, there was planned to have all 22 ordered units in service on end of 1998, but today, there are just two units completed, other five is close to completion (but no work in progress now!). It is hoped to complete order in Spring 2001, but no one believes…

One day later, business court declared concurs over CKD Dopravni systemy, 420 people (about ? of total amount) were fired off. Company Skoda Plzen wants to overtake all orders, mainly metro cars for Praha and electric locos for Vietnam), CKD of course refused this proposal. Siemens has, however, still interest.

Since early January, on C line is in service 5-car metro unit with all-advertisement livery. Cars are now blue/white.

Since 10th February is for 1 ? years closed tramway route to Hlubocepy (No.12) because of construction of inner city highway circle). Line 12 is shortened to loop Smichovske nadrazi, on other hand is extended from Palmovka to Harfa (in rush hours still ends on Stary Hloubetin loop). It is also expected, that during this time, crossing of tramway line with railway connection of Lihovar will be removed. After completion, there will be only one crossing with railway in Knizeci st., but this crossing is not used by railway for longer time.

Ústí nad Labem: On 23.1.2000 new trolleybus line 59 Mírové náměstí – Staré Předlice was created. It is served only within rush hours, and 14Tr trolleybuses are used here. After a long time, these cars can be observed in daily transport (they were usually in service only during nights). Main reason for creation of that line is improvement for bus connection in Staré Předlice.

Slovakia – Bratislava: Proposal from Stuttgart to purchase 18 old non-refurbished GT-4 cars was rejected.

Slovakia – Poprad: Tatra electric railway, famous and popular combination of tramway and railway will receive within April first new electric railcar, base on Gtw 2/6 type built by Staedler. Another 13 vehicles will be completed in railway workshop in Vrutky, and in service will be prior September 2001. These cars will replace all older electric units of 420 class (except two, that will be kept as iron reserve, and probably also as museum vehicles). It means, that this unique „tramwayrailway“ will lost its tramway character, as new vehicles are much close to railway than to tramway.

Slovensko – Košice: Another historic tramcar started to operate in Kosice. Here it is forme Praha’s tramcar No.371 that was built for Praha in 1915 and in 1948 sold to Kosice, where was in service as No.10. After withdrawal from passenger service in 1968 was used as snow plow until 1990 when was stored in depot. Now it was restored back to 1948’s state and is operational now, however interior was not completed yet (will be done soon). Restoration is in progress on another tramway No.21 (again built for Praha in 1907-1909), but original No. is not known). Bogie was completely renewed, and new body should be built now. Completion should be finished prior 2001, when 110 years of tramways will be celebrated. Before this time, renewed should be also former goods-transport tramcar No.1 and T-2 car No.234. Except these tramcars, there are another historic tramcars, replica of horse-tramway, goods-transport coach No.3, and two-axle cars No.103 and 104 purchased in 1985 (!) from Praha for circle journeys. Non-operational are tramcars T-1 No.203 and T-3 246 built in 1963. Remaining two cars, ex.Praha’s car No.397 (here No.12) and goods-transport coach No.2 were scrapped and spare parts were used for vehicles mentioned above. In future, into collection should be also included (still used today as school car) T-3SU car No.100 (ex.261) that was delivered into 1971 and was the only one two-door T-3 car delivered into former Czechoslovakia!
